Painted by You Qiu late in the sixteenth century, this elegant scroll depicts seven scholars at leisure in a garden, distinguished by a bamboo balustrade, a towering rock, a wutong (Firmiana simplex) tree, and a banana tree. The scholars enjoy the pleasures of a summer afternoon: four scholars, relaxing around a table, sip wine and converse in front of a screen, while three scholars in the foreground compete in a game of touhu, or "pitch pot," an ancient arrow-tossing game. A woman bearing a duster observes the gentlemen, and eight young boys, their hair in topknots, attend them. The son-in-law of the literati painter Qiu Ying (d. 1552), You Qiu was a member of the most elite artistic coterie of his day, the Wu school, which emphasized elegant composition, delicate colors, and refined brushwork. He is best remembered for his figure paintings in baimiao, or "plain drawing," technique, which eschews color in favor of sure lines and occasional ink washes. Taking inspiration from Song (960-1279) and Yuan (1279-1368) paintings, You Qiu's figural compositions possess an antique flavor that sets them apart from the work of his Ming dynasty (1368-1644) contemporaries.

This long handscroll work is an imaginary representation of various activities in a Han dynasty (206 BC–AD 220) palace on a spring morning.
This long handscroll work is an imaginary representation of various activities in a Han dynasty (206 BC–AD 220) palace on a spring morning. Among them is the famous story of Mao Yanshou (毛延壽) painting the portrait of Wang Zhaojun (王昭君). As the story goes, the concubines of Emperor Yuandi (r. 48–33 BC) were so numerous that he ordered the artist Mao Yanshou to paint their portraits in order to choose them for attendance. Except for the righteous Wang Zhaojun, all the concubines bribed the artist to portray them even more beautiful. For not receiving a bribe, the artist portrayed Wang less beautiful, ruining her chances of seeing the emperor. One day, when a barbarian chieftain came to the court seeking relations, he sought a Han beauty as his wife. The emperor, believing Wang Zhaojun to be the least attractive of the concubines, chose her as the chieftain’s wife. Only when he saw her did he realize that she was the most beautiful of them all. Infuriated, he had the artist executed.

Suzhou city was the cultural centre of ancient south China. It continues the urban pattern of more than 800 years ago. Suzhou gardens are the essence of Chinese gardening art, as well as the valuable world cultural heritage site. This paper compared the evolution in the distribution and scale of Suzhou gardens among five historical periods, and discussed the influence of urbanization on gardening. It revealed that: (1) The distribution of Suzhou gardens was affected by the layout and changes of the political centre and commercial centre of Suzhou city; (2) The scale of Suzhou gardens was mainly affected by the available land scale within the city and the wealth of its owner; (3) The cityscape of ‘half city occupied by gardens’ was largely resulted from the rapidly increasing number of small courtyard gardens in the Qing Dynasty; (4) The evolution of Suzhou gardens’ distribution and scale affected interior layouts. The evolution and social development of ancient cities can affect the distribution and scale of gardens. At the same time, the popularization of gardening art also optimizes the cityscape.

In China, many ornamental plants associated with Buddhist figures, including the Sakyamuni, Bodhisattva, and Arhat, were grown and worshiped because of their cultural and religious significance. However, the systematic collation and ethnobotanical information about these culturally important plants have yet to be fully understood. Online information was collected from 93 e-commercial platforms for ornamental plants all over China. Field sampling was conducted in 16 ornamental markets and 163 Buddhist temples using key informant interviews and participatory observation with traders, tourists, and local disciples. The types, distributions, and associated characteristics of the screened plants were summarized and the evolving characteristics of these ornamental plants were analyzed. A total of 60 ornamental plants, including six varieties and one subspecies, were screened, of which 43 species were associated with Sakyamuni, 13 with Bodhisattva, and four with Arhat. Among the 60 species, three were regarded as the Asoka tree related to Buddha's birth, ten as the Bodhi tree connected to Buddha's enlightenment, three as the Sal tree associated with Buddha's nirvana, nine were related to Buddha’s head, belly, or hand, and 18 were connected with Buddha as lotus throne, bamboo monastery, or Bodhi beads. The evolving characteristics of these ornamental plants primarily constituted the substitution of the original plants by similar native plant species, followed by the introduced specie...
