Archiving DOOM Mods: Modular Gameplay Mods Thread (2025)

Hey all. I've decided it would probably be in the interests of mod players and modmakers alike to curate lists of mods that can be referenced later on in the interests of discoverability, as explained in a slightly-irrelevantpersonal anecdote I'll include below a spoiler section.

Spoiler

Recently, I was thinking about DOOM vids I used to watch and I remembered this genre of vids where people would try to make DOOM into some other genre of game. Pretty bog-standard stuff, but a recurring theme of these vids was that the people involved didn't just use one overhaul mod but rather used several small mods to try and get a particular vibe going. Pretty smart stuff if you're trying to go for a video series that you can just use and reuse. I took a moment to try and remember the name of one of them-- I think one that turned pickups into physics affected items that you could put into and out of your inventory, and I realized I couldn't. I then tried to look up the name of this mod and I realized that discoverability on mods is... pretty terrible.

I believe that now is a very good time to make such a list, as GZDOOM recently had a breaking change that necessitates an update for security reasons. Collating these all in one place can also begin a process of taking account for how many such mods have lost compatibility.

While I think we should make several compilations like this one, here's the kinds of mods that I'm looking for in this particular compilation:

  • These mods are meant to be compatible with others on a broad basis, i.e. they are NOT total overhauls. They are modular inasmuch as they are meant to affect one small part of gameplay without causing major incompatibilities with attempts to modify other parts of gameplay.
  • While enemy replacements fit within this niche, they are such an expansive category they should have their own compilation.
  • The same is true of straight weapon replacements, which are often the bread and butter of DOOM modding as a scene.

Here are the mods that I've found so far which fit these criteria:

  • Gearbox: The exemplar of this mod type, it allows for easier weapon selection through weapon wheels. Succeeds an older project. [GZDOOM compatible only]
  • Flashlight++: A mod that just adds a flashlight independent of your weapons. [GZDOOM compatible only]
  • Tilt++: A mod that modifies camera tilt for visual flair: explicitly works additively with other mods that add head tilt. [GZDOOM compatible only]
  • Nashgore NEXT: From the creator of the above, successor mod for the most commonly used DOOM gore mod. [GZDOOM compatible only]
  • Bolognese Blood and Gore: A competing, vanilla-focused gore mod. [GZDOOM compatible only]
  • Footsteps: A mod that allows for certain floor textures to produce different footstep sounds. [GZDOOM compatible only]
  • ZMovement: A mod affecting player movement to make it more closely resemble that of 3D games like Quake. [GZDOOM compatible only]
  • Immerse: General Purpose Immersive Camera Mutator: A combo mod of several of the above meant to provide immersive camera movement. [GZDOOM compatible only]
  • JP Mobility and JP Mobility: Jump-Started: A set of mods that adds parkour-style movement tech. [GZDOOM compatible only]
  • Ultimate Custom Doom: A quite-expansive general difficulty, movement, and powerup editor. [GZDOOM compatible only]
  • Better Air Control: A contrarily very specific movement control mod for midair movement. [GZDOOM compatible only]
  • Keystrokes Addon: A mod that specifically emulates OBS' keyboard overlay feature in the game's UI. [GZDOOM compatible only]
  • Infinite Backpack Doubler: A mod that doubles your ammunition every time you pick up a backpack up to the INT_LARGE limit. [GZDOOM compatible only]
  • Pickups Randomizer: A mod that, as the name implies, randomizes the quantity and type of pickups present in a map. Needs vanilla ammo types to work. [GZDOOM compatible only]
  • Smart Scavenger: A mod that breaks open health pickups into smaller parts when your health is too high to use it all. [GZDOOM compatible only]
  • Use to Pickup: A mod that makes it so you have to use pickups to... pick them up. [GZDOOM compatible only]
  • Inventory DOOM: Another mod around inventory management, this one turns pickups into useable inventory items instead. [GZDOOM compatible only]
  • Inventory Keeper: A mod built around preventing death exits from clearing out your inventory. [GZDOOM compatible only]
  • Universal Automatic Continuation: A mod built around keeping your inventory beyond episode ends. Appears to be a successor mod to this. [GZDOOM compatible only]

Additionally, here are some oddballs that technically fulfill the criteria despite not seeming to at first glance:

  • Corruption Cards: A famous, very modular, very compatible mod that affects the difficulty of enemies and maps without doing any replacements. [GZDOOMcompatible only]
  • Gun Bonsai: A weapon leveling system that aims to be compatible with a wide variety of weapon modifications. Has a number of addons. [GZDOOM compatible only]
  • Definitive Rain: A weather-based shitpost made by Nash. I am nothing if not thorough. [GZDOOM compatible only]

You may ask yourself, "why the overabundance of [GZDOOM compatible only] tags?" For one, I am not as well-read in MBF modding as I am in GZDOOM modding. I can't definitively state whether or not MBF21 is capable of utility mods, so I figure it is for the best to leave the door open and simply update the list as necessary. For another, I am seeking to future-proof this list.

Please drop by and participate where you can! There are a number of blind spots, and I'm open to expertise in older modding scenes like EDGE which are very deprecated now or less-well-known scenes like the Eternity Engine.

Edited by Deffers: Started at sixteen most up-to-date mods and two deprecated projects. Have updated to 23 most up-to-date mods with three deprecated..
